Blob Opera is a delightful interactive musical game developed by David Li in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture. Launched in December 2020, this experimental project allows users to create and explore operatic music in a highly engaging and accessible way. Blob Opera uses advanced machine learning models to synthesize realistic operatic voices, making it both a fun pastime and a unique introduction to classical music.
The game features four colorful, blob-like characters representing different vocal ranges:
Players can manipulate each blob by dragging them up and down to change pitch and forward or backward to adjust vowel sounds. The blobs harmonize automatically, ensuring the resulting music always sounds melodious. This harmony feature is powered by a neural network trained on hours of opera singing, though none of the training data includes recordings of the blobs' actual voices.
Blob Opera is more than just a game—it serves as an educational tool. It introduces users to the basics of vocal ranges and harmony, making opera more accessible to people who might not typically engage with it. By merging technology with art, the game highlights the creative potential of machine learning in cultural and musical contexts.
